The other night I was talking to a friend of mine who was telling me this story about how he was at his friends house and his boyfriend just rocked up unannounced. He was saying that it was really weird and I agreed. Then on second thought I said “You know, before mobile phones it was completely normal to just rock up at peoples houses unannounced”. It got me thinking about how mobile phones have completely changed a lot of the ways we interact. It wasn’t long before I started applying the thought of how technology had changed things to my own situation.
I know I’m not alone in saying this but, I have a shocking batting average when it comes to meeting guys off the internet or through gay dating apps. I find it really hard to strike up conversations with complete strangers and an even harder time keeping the conversation flowing. In a real life scenario, I find it much easier to make conversation and flirt but when I am starring at that stupid screen my mind goes blank. I just don’t know what to say.
So I began to imagine if I was a gay man in the 1980′s, before mobile phones and grindr, before the internet, how would I have met other gay guys to date? I don’t like gay pubs and nightclubs much so that wouldn’t be an option for me. After discussing it with a couple of friends we came up with a very old school approach, meeting guys through friends. It’s what people have done for thousands of years yet with the bombardment of dating websites and dating apps, the most simple approach has seemed to fly under the radar to me.
Do you think that dating in a digital age has become far to complicated? Or does digital dating suit your needs? For me I think a simpler approach may be an easier approach.
